CHEGUTU – Four schoolgirls aged between 13 and 15 have drowned at Petra Dam in Chegutu after allegedly being confronted by a group of seven suspects who accused them of illegal fishing.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) said the incident occurred at Petra Farm on Sunday, October 18, 2026, at around 9pm.
The victims have been identified as Letty Sedrick (14), Tadiwa Phiri (15), Faith Woda (13) and Mercy Tembo (14). They were Grade Six and Seven pupils.
In a statement, National Police Spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the girls were reportedly fishing with a mosquito net when they were confronted by the suspects over alleged illegal fishing.
One of the boys accompanying the girls was allegedly assaulted when he attempted to flee.
He managed to escape by swimming across the dam, followed by another boy, leaving the four girls behind in the water.
Police suspect the girls also attempted to swim across the dam but failed to reach the opposite bank.
Their bodies were recovered on Monday, October 19.
Two suspects, aged 16 and 19, have been arrested and are assisting police with investigations, while five others are still being sought.
Police are investigating the case as suspected culpable homicide.
