Kenyan President William Ruto has mourned Zimbabwean businessman Wicknell Chivayo, describing him as a “dear friend” following his death in a helicopter crash in Marondera on Wednesday.
The crash also claimed the life of Chivayo’s wife, Lucy Muteke.
The couple were among six people who died when the helicopter crashed in the Marondera Rural area.
Authorities have confirmed that there were no survivors.
In a condolence message, Ruto said he was “deeply saddened” by Chivayo’s death, describing his passing, together with that of Muteke and the other victims, as a painful loss.
“Wicknell was a dear friend whose warmth touched many people. I will remember him for his friendship, his energy and his deep conviction in the possibilities of our continent,” Ruto said.
Ruto conveyed his condolences to the families of the victims, President Emmerson Mnangagwa, the people of Zimbabwe and all those mourning the tragedy.
“May God grant Wicknell, Lucy and all those who perished eternal rest,” he said.
Chivayo and Ruto had developed a close friendship, with the Zimbabwean businessman making several visits to Kenya and appearing alongside the Kenyan president on various occasions.
Chivayo had recently shared a video on social media showing him being driven around Ruto’s farm.
